About the Author

J.R.R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's works have been translated into at least 38 languages, and have sold over 150 million copies worldwide.

Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on January 3, 1892. He moved to England with his family when he was three years old. Tolkien attended King Edward's School in Birmingham, and then Exeter College, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary.

In 1916, Tolkien enlisted in the British Army and fought in World War I. He was discharged from the army in 1920, and returned to Oxford to teach English language and literature. Tolkien remained at Oxford for the rest of his life, teaching and writing.

Tolkien began writing The Hobbit in 1937, as a story to tell his children. The Hobbit was published in 1937, and was an immediate success. Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings in 1937, and it was published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955.

Tolkien died in Bournemouth, England, on September 2, 1973. He is buried in Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford.
