A Photographic Journey to the Far East

In 1886, the Russian cruiser Varyag embarked on a remarkable voyage to the Far East. The ship's photographer, Ivan Zhirkov, documented the journey in a series of stunning photographs that offer a glimpse into a world that has long since vanished.

The Varyag's voyage took her from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean, and from there to the ports of China, Japan, and Korea. Zhirkov's photographs capture the beauty of these exotic lands, as well as the everyday life of the people who lived there.

We see images of bustling streets, crowded markets, and ancient temples. We see portraits of the people of the Far East, from the humble peasants to the wealthy merchants. And we see the Varyag herself, a magnificent ship that was a symbol of Russia's growing power in the region.

Zhirkov's photographs are not only beautiful, but they are also historically important. They provide a valuable record of a time and place that has been lost to history. Thanks to his work, we can still experience the wonders of the Far East as they were seen by a Russian sailor over a century ago.

The Varyag's Voyage

The Varyag was a protected cruiser of the Imperial Russian Navy. She was built in 1884 at the Baltic Works in St. Petersburg. The ship was 318 feet long and displaced 6,500 tons. She was armed with four 8-inch guns, twelve 6-inch guns, and eight 3-inch guns.

The Varyag was commissioned in 1886 and assigned to the Pacific Squadron. She departed from Kronstadt on 11 October 1886, and arrived in Nagasaki, Japan, on 13 April 1887. The Varyag spent the next three years patrolling the waters of the Far East. She visited ports in China, Japan, and Korea, and participated in several naval exercises.

In 1890, the Varyag was recalled to Russia to participate in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. She arrived in China in June 1900 and joined the international force that was sent to quell the rebellion. The Varyag participated in several engagements with the Boxers, and her crew was awarded the Free Download of St. George for their bravery.

After the Boxer Rebellion, the Varyag was assigned to the Baltic Fleet. She remained in Russian service until 1917, when she was scuttled at Kronstadt to prevent her from falling into the hands of the Bolsheviks.

Ivan Zhirkov

Ivan Zhirkov was born in 1858 in the village of Bolshaya Tsarevna, Russia. He joined the Imperial Russian Navy in 1876 and served as a photographer aboard the Varyag from 1886 to 1889.

Zhirkov was a talented photographer, and his work provides a valuable record of the Varyag's voyage. His photographs are not only beautiful, but they are also historically important. They offer a glimpse into a world that has long since vanished.

After leaving the Varyag, Zhirkov continued to serve in the Imperial Russian Navy. He retired in 1905 with the rank of captain. Zhirkov died in 1937.

The Varyag Photo Album

The Varyag Photo Album is a collection of Zhirkov's photographs from the Varyag's voyage. The album was published in 1890 and was a great success. It was praised for its beauty and its historical importance. The Varyag Photo Album is still considered one of the most important photographic records of the Far East in the late 19th century.

The Varyag Photo Album is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Far East, the Imperial Russian Navy, or photography. It is a beautiful and fascinating book that offers a unique glimpse into a world that has long since vanished.
