In 1886, the Russian cruiser Varyag embarked on a remarkable voyage to the Far East. The ship's photographer, Ivan Zhirkov, documented the journey in a series of stunning photographs that offer a glimpse into a world that has long since vanished.

The Varyag's Voyage
The Varyag was a protected cruiser of the Imperial Russian Navy. She was built in 1884 at the Baltic Works in St. Petersburg. The ship was 318 feet long and displaced 6,500 tons. She was armed with four 8-inch guns, twelve 6-inch guns, and eight 3-inch guns.
The Varyag was commissioned in 1886 and assigned to the Pacific Squadron. She departed from Kronstadt on 11 October 1886, and arrived in Nagasaki, Japan, on 13 April 1887. The Varyag spent the next three years patrolling the waters of the Far East. She visited ports in China, Japan, and Korea, and participated in several naval exercises.
In 1890, the Varyag was recalled to Russia to participate in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. She arrived in China in June 1900 and joined the international force that was sent to quell the rebellion. The Varyag participated in several engagements with the Boxers, and her crew was awarded the Free Download of St. George for their bravery.
After the Boxer Rebellion, the Varyag was assigned to the Baltic Fleet. She remained in Russian service until 1917, when she was scuttled at Kronstadt to prevent her from falling into the hands of the Bolsheviks.
Ivan Zhirkov
Ivan Zhirkov was born in 1858 in the village of Bolshaya Tsarevna, Russia. He joined the Imperial Russian Navy in 1876 and served as a photographer aboard the Varyag from 1886 to 1889.
Zhirkov was a talented photographer, and his work provides a valuable record of the Varyag's voyage. His photographs are not only beautiful, but they are also historically important. They offer a glimpse into a world that has long since vanished.
After leaving the Varyag, Zhirkov continued to serve in the Imperial Russian Navy. He retired in 1905 with the rank of captain. Zhirkov died in 1937.
